Recently the Government outlined a 10-step plan for the Green Industrial Revolution and we wanted to know if you, as heating installers, feel prepared for what is to come in the future? We are looking at this from a heat pump perspective so ultimately, do you feel there is enough support for the installation of heat pumps?
Heat Pumps: What are they?
Simply put, heat pumps are a source of renewable, low carbon heating for a property. The main types are ground source heat pumps and air source heat pumps. Ground source heat pumps take stored solar heat in the ground through a collector pipe, into a compressor which converts this solar energy into useable heat for your property, which can then be distributed via underfloor heating or radiators. Air source heat pumps work in a similar way, the main difference being that they collect solar energy from the air around them.
Why Heat Pumps?
Heat pumps are also incredibly efficient pieces of kit, working at around 300-400%, meaning you can get anywhere between 3-4kW of useful heat from every 1kW of electricity used. Given that an increasing portion of the UK’s electricity is coming from zero carbon sources like solar and wind, heat pumps represent the most efficient way to utilise this carbon electricity. Heat pumps are also capable of running, efficiently up to -20 degrees outside temperature, ensuring that the keep the home warm and cosy even during the harshest winters.
Heat Pump Training
There are many types of heat pump training courses out there. Some are a requirement in order to become MCS yourself; some are manufacturer specific.
We decided to opt for a different approach, which is to provide training to competent installers to give you the knowledge you need to install heat pumps under our MCS umbrella. Our heat pump training is a half day course (lunch included… well once we are allowed to have them in the training centre again!), and covers everything you need to start installing heat pumps for your clients.
If, like most of the installers we work with, you don’t install enough heat pumps day in day out to justify gaining and maintaining the MCS accreditation yourselves, this course is perfect for you. The training is free, and it’s all run by our Technical Director Dave Webb, who knows heat pumps inside-out, which will enable you to ask whatever questions you want and not just get an answer read out from a manual.
MCS Accredited
As heating installers you may often see that you must be MCS Accredited to install heat pumps. Whilst the heat pump has to be signed off to MCS standards you are not required to be MCS Accredited yourself. Alto Energy offer a MCS Umbrella Scheme which means that you can install heat pumps without the hassle of the MCS paperwork, because we take care of all of it for you! Our services are design, supply, commissioning and aftercare (certificate registrations/warranty registrations/etc. etc.), you just have to focus on the install!
