Scotland is leading the way in generating electricity through renewable sources. In fact 97.4% of the country’s electricity is from a renewable source. Despite this progress, there is a big job to do decarbonising energy in the transport and heat sectors, as stated by Head of Policy at Scottish Renewables, Morag Watson.
Electricity and transport each make up 25% of energy use, while heat alone accounts for 50% of energy use in Scotland. Watson has said that fitting low-carbon technology, like heat pumps, in homes throughout Scotland could be a real ‘game-changer’.
Jacqueline Redmond from the Scottish National Investment Bank has welcomed plans for a cabinet secretary to cover net zero to bring all the pieces together in the energy, transport and heat sectors.
Heat Pumps In Scotland
Heat pumps have been installed throughout Scotland for a number of years now, however the total number of units being installed needs to increase in order to help the county reach net zero. Heat pumps are a low-carbon source of heating and hot water for your home. They are powered by electricity and you can expect to receive between 3 - 4 units of useful heat output for every 1 unit of electricity input. As Scotland is generating so much of it’s electricity through renewables, heat pumps represent the most sustainable low-carbon heating solution available.
The market for heat pumps is growing, and at a quicker rate than we have seen before. If you are replacing your existing heating system, or maybe even started out on your own new build or barn conversion, then consider installing a heat pump for your project. Reduced running costs, grant payments and doing your bit to help reach that net-zero future are just a few of the reasons why.
