Heat Pump Installations Climb to Record Levels

A Record Year for MCS Certified Heat Pump Installations

Heat pump installations in the UK have already exceeded last year’s total, setting a new milestone for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) with three months still to go in 2024. By the end of September, 42,000 installations were completed—outpacing 2023's total by approximately 4%.

A key factor driving this growth is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), which has significantly boosted adoption in England and Wales. The scheme has contributed to a sharp rise in installations, averaging 4,673 heat pumps per month in 2024—up from 3,368 per month in 2023. At this rate, the UK is on track to surpass 56,000 installations by year-end, well beyond the 40,424 achieved in 2023.

This surge reflects the growing momentum behind low-carbon heating solutions as consumers increasingly recognise the benefits of heat pumps.

Ian Rippin, CEO of MCS said:

“It’s great to see more consumers across the UK making the switch to heat pumps for their home heating needs. There’s still progress to be made to reach the government target of 600,000 installations per year by 2028, but MCS certification will play a key role in driving further adoption, by ensuring everyone has confidence in the quality, safety, and performance of their heat pump installations”.

£50 Million Boost for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

With the demand for air source heat pumps at an all-time high, the UK government has injected an additional £50 million into the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for 2024. The Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, has approved this additional allocation, emphasising the government's commitment to advancing home energy efficiency.

A spokesperson for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) stated:

“By allowing Ofgem to continue allocating vouchers for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, we are making sure consumers and industry can continue installing heat pumps.”

“We have also kickstarted our Warm Homes Plan, with proposals for the biggest potential boost to home energy standards that are set to lift one million households out of fuel poverty.”

As more homeowners prioritise cutting energy bills and reducing their carbon footprints, this additional funding ensures that the growing interest can be met, allowing even more households to transition to air source heat pumps.
