Mitsubishi have just launched the latest upgrade to their already market-leading Ecodan air source heat pumps. Below you will find a summary of the new features, as well as our take as to what the upgrades mean for our customers.
Improving the Market-Leading Product Range
Here is a summary of the new features of the range:
A BRAND NEW MODEL – THE 6KW W60 ECODAN
Introducing the new R32 6kW W60 Mitsubishi Ecodan Ultra Quiet air source heat pump. 6kW is a new output for Mitsubishi, sitting between the existing 5kW and 8.5kW models. And it’s a welcome addition to the range, as it gives more design flexibility for taking heat pumps to the mass market.
Why is this useful?
Here are two scenarios where this new model is going to be useful:
For smaller new build properties with a low heat load that still require a large amount of hot water. The increase in capacity will reduce reheat times.
For older properties that have too high a heat load to comfortably fit onto a 5kW unit, the jump all the way up to an 8.5kW unit sometimes feels over the top. The 6kW will enable us to design more cost effective solutions for retrofit projects for typical British homes.
The new model comes in the Ultra Quiet format which is great news for mass market application, as it makes compliance with the noise regulations for permitted development much more straightforward. As part of our design package we carry out noise assessments to satisfy permitted development, and the Ultra Quiet models certainly make our lives easier!
A FACELIFT FOR THE 5KW W50 ECODAN
When Mitsubishi introduced the upgraded 8.5kW and 11kW models previously, these units came with a new design black and white design and all round improved aesthetics. Now the 5kW model has the same black and white design.
Why is this useful?
On new build developments where there is a mixture of heat pump sizes required for each property type, it is nice if the air source heat pumps can all have the same look. This will now be possible.
NEW R32 REFRIGERANT
The headline feature of the new range is that all models now utilise the greener R32 refrigerant. Like refrigerators, heat pumps utilise a refrigeration cycle driven by a compressor to extract heat from the outside air and convert it into useful heat energy for heating and hot water.
Why is this useful?
Refrigeration systems require a refrigerant. Refrigeration gases themselves can be very harmful to the environment if they are allowed into the open air. Obviously refrigeration cycles are all completely sealed so that this can’t happen, however accidents and failures do still happen and that is why there is a global effort to reduce the “global warming potential” of the refrigerants we use in all refrigeration products.
R32 is classed as a “green refrigerant” because it has a much lower global warming potential than traditional refrigerants, meaning that if accidents do happen, the impact on global warming is significantly reduced.
