The Telegraph recently published an article stating UK National targets for replacing gas boilers with heat pumps are based on unrealistic assumptions about the number of installers required to undertake such a transformation. The Energy and Utilities Alliance estimates that almost 3 times as many installers are required if the Government wants to achieve their heat pump installation targets.
As a leader in the heat pump marketplace, we agree with this premise and believe a lot more installers are required for the UK to reach Net Zero targets. We feel the UK has an abundance of talented heating installers and plumbers, however, many just need to be shown how to install a heat pump.
This is exactly why we operate our MCS Umbrella Scheme and offer our free heat pump training courses to any plumbing and heating engineers who would like to learn how to install a heat pump.
Heat Pump Training
Our Introduction To Installing Heat Pumps is a one day, hands on course, either at our headquarters in Oxfordshire, or we have an online version available for those who cannot travel to our facility. We take you through everything you need to know about the installation process of a heat pump, including the similarities and differences of installing a gas boiler.
Our training facility has a variety of heat pumps, as well are many types of unvented cylinders and internal units, creating a first class environment for you to learn how heat pumps work and the installation process.
Our goal at Alto energy isn't just to sell and install as many heat pumps as possible. Primarily, our focus is to educate and train as many heating engineers as we can, so that you can gain the knowledge, experience and confidence to be able to offer heat pump installations to your customers.
For the majority of heating engineers, installing gas boilers will be your bread and butter. We fully expect gas boiler installations to continue in the near term, however, being able to offer heat pump installations will add an additional string to your bow and help future proof your business. After you've completed your course and finished your first heat pump installation, we can onboard you as an Alto Assured Partner, who will help us deliver heat pump installations to our customers.
OUR MCS UMBRELLA SCHEME
Our MCS umbrella scheme is designed to enable your customers to receive a fully MCS accredited heat pump installation, without all the hassle of maintaining the accreditation and compiling all of the paperwork yourself. We take care all of the MCS design work, we specify and supply the heat pump equipment that you need, and one of our regionally-based engineers will inspect and commission the installation once you’ve completed it.

Government Grants
Over the next few years, we expect the heat pump industry to continue growing, especially given government grants, like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and the Home Energy Scotland Grant Loan.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is particularly important for installers and heating engineers to pay attention to. Many home owners will make the transition to a sustainable heating system using the Boiler Upgrade Scheme as a route in. As it stands, consumers must use an MCS Accredited Installer to be able to claim the grant. As you can imagine, becoming MCS Accredited is costly and time consuming and once an installer is approved, any heat pump installation jobs will incur a lot of paperwork. Working with us on the other hand will make installing heat pumps a piece of cake.
Our MCS Umbrella Scheme allows installers to partner with us to deliver an accredited heat pump installation without needing the accreditation themselves. In a nutshell, we take care of the design, supply, commissioning and administrative work, while you to take care of the installation. We believe this is a win for the customer, a win for the installer and a win for ourselves.
