Ground source heat pump chosen to provide a heating and hot water solution for a barn conversion in Buckinghamshire.
Mr Prothero had installed air source heat pumps on various projects before. Now venturing on a barn conversion for his own project, he decided to go down the ground source heat pump route. With a project to heat the barn conversion efficiently and cost effectively; to reduce his carbon footprint; and with land available for the outside pipework, a ground source heat pump made perfect sense.
The heat pump operates in conjunction with an underfloor heating system, ensuring the optimum efficiency from the heat pump. This is because the heat pump runs at lower flow temperatures, and a larger surface area is covered. When operating with heat pumps, underfloor heating yields lower running costs than traditional radiator systems.
When we asked how Mr Prothero has found living with the system, he said: “Like all underfloor heating systems we find it runs itself. The ground source is very efficient providing all our heating requirements and endless hot water on demand.”
When installing a heat pump you can expect massive carbon savings against other traditional types of heating, just as our customer has this time round. In fact a heat pump produces 80% less compared to heating oil!
