Published on the 3rd February 2020, Ofgem released a Decarbonisation Action Plan which sets out a new plan to decarbonise the UK’s energy system, so that the net zero carbon emissions targets are met by 2050.
There has been significant progress in decarbonising the economy, in fact overall emissions have fallen by 40% since 1990, however the report sets out how to take the next step and reduce emissions even further,
Below are a selection of the comments in the plan that relate specifically to heat pump technology:
Referencing the alternatives to current heating technologies:
Electric heat pumps (including hybrid variations) and replacing natural gas with hydrogen are two of the alternative low carbon technologies to heat our buildings in the future
Referencing the need for many homes needing to adopt heat pump technology:
We expect that heat pumps will be needed to heat many homes
Greater uptake of domestic and commercial heat pumps to electrify heating

Net Zero 2050 Target
In June of 2019, the UK Government committed to Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This was previously set at an 80% reduction on 1990 emissions levels. Further to this, the Scottish parliament set their net zero target to 2045, and the Welsh government intend to introduce legislation to amend its existing target no later than 2050.
Heat Pump Technology
Heat pumps work by drawing natural stored warmth from the ground or air. This replaces the need to burn environmentally toxic fossil fuels, which in turn produce CO2 emissions. Heat Pumps only require approximately 1 unit of electricity for every 4 units of useful heat produced into the property, thereby creating a low carbon form of heating.
No matter your project, be it a development of houses, flats, your own new build or retrofitting a heat pump into your property, Alto Energy would be more than happy to discuss your options with you and design the correct ground source heat pump or air source heat pump for your project.
